FAQ
Q: How do I get a Marble Spinner Mug?
A: Sign up to our mailing list for access to shop updates. We release ~30-50 mugs every-other month or so. If you are subscribed to our emails, you will receive notification of upcoming sales and get a password to access the shop at the time of each sale. The mugs sell very quickly, so it is important to keep an eye on your inbox and act fast.
Q: Why do you password protect your shop during your sales?
A: When we update our online shop, we place it behind password protection in order to give our mailing list subscribers a fair chance to get a mug. Our protocol is to give two hours advanced access via password before we open the shop to the public, but the mugs have yet to last two hours. We remove the password protection once they sell out (or after two hours, whichever comes first) so the general public can view our website and see examples of our sold-out work in between updates.
Q: I signed up for your emails. Why haven’t I gotten any?
A: Check your spam/junk folder. Some email servers are more likely to filter than others. You should get a welcome email soon after you sign up.
Q: How are the mugs already sold out by the time I get the password email?
A: We schedule the emails to go out to all our customers at the same time, but once they leave our outbox, we have no control over how quickly the emails reach each inbox. For whatever reason, some customers receive the emails instantly while others could take several minutes. Don’t be discouraged! Stay on the mailing list and we’ll keep making more mugs!
Q: Can I pre-order or custom order Marble Spinner Mugs?
A: We are not currently taking orders. The best way to get a mug is to sign up for our mailing list and be vigilant. Contact us if you are interested in purchasing one-time advanced access to any upcoming releases.
Q: What countries do you sell/ship to?
A: We are based in the USA and offer free domestic shipping to all 50 states. Our international market includes Australia, Canada, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong SAR, India, Ireland, Mexico, New Zealand, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Singapore, Switzerland, and United Kingdom. International shipping rates will be calculated and displayed at checkout based on the destination country, shipping address, and order weight. If you are interested in making a purchase but do not see your country on this list, please contact us and we will do our best to add it for future sales.
Q: Can you change the sound?
A: We cannot use a different material or glaze the marbles in order to produce a smoother sound. The marble gets smoother with regular use, and each mug has it’s own voice depending on the subtleties of the handle, body, and the way the marble rests in its cavity.
Q: Are these mugs hard to clean? Food-safe?
A: There is an opening at the bottom of the marble as well as the top, so the marble area (along with the rest of the mug) is very easy to rinse thoroughly and keep clean. Our pottery is microwave, oven, and dishwasher safe, but we recommend pampering with gentle treatment and hand washing. All of our clay, slips, and glazes have been tested for durability and food safety and are fully vitrified (non-porous). With over a decade of experience producing functional pottery, rest assured that our pieces are durable, comfortable, safe, and practical for everyday use.
Q: Does the marble interfere with the stability of the handle?
A: Not at all. Klayton makes very stable, sturdy handles with plenty of room to wrap multiple fingers comfortably. The thumb is able to rest or fidget freely on the marble without it affecting the overall grip.
Q: Will the marble fall out? Can I take the marble out?
A: No. The void hugs the marble and encases it from the top and bottom. It would require the handle to be broken or extended exposure to extreme grinding force (more so than would occur with regular use) in order to get the marble out.
Q: How do you do this?
A: Each mug is wheel-thrown, handles are hand-pulled, and marbles are handmade by ceramic artist, Klayton Huff. All of the elements are formed and assembled during the wet clay stage. Surface decorations (using a variety of techniques) are designed and applied by Klayton and his wife, Molly Brouwer. We mix our own glazes and fire our pots to a cone 5.5 (2195°F) oxidation.
Q: What’s the point?
A: Initially, the Marble Spinner Mug was a concept created by Klayton Huff to combine his two passions… marbles and making handmade pottery mugs. He found the thumb rest on the handle of his mugs to be the perfect place to create a viewing and fiddling interface for his handmade clay marbles. He followed his curiosity not realizing that it would resonate with so many people for a variety of reasons. When Klayton and Molly publicized the first successful Marble Spinner Mug, they expected mug, marble, and pottery enthusiasts to be interested, but they also got unexpected feedback about fidgeting, meditation, dhikr, ADHD, OCD, neurodivergence, and sensory seeking. Public feedback has made us realize the many uses of the Marble Spinner Mug, but it also has emphasized the importance of the mug in general as a personal object for daily rituals. Through the mug, a considerate potter has an opportunity to spread thoughtfulness and connection through a handmade object… one that will be handled and enjoyed daily and develop an intimate relationship with the customer who appreciates it.
